Roundness and Cylindricity

Roundness and cylindricity can be measured using two general types of measurement:

  1. Both dimensions can be measured using an intrinsic datum, using the part itself as the reference. Tools that may assist in this type of measurement include:
  • Micrometers
  • Vernier calipers
  • Vblock and dial gauge
  • Rotation between center

2. An extrinsic datum can be provided by a precision spindle that serves as a reference. The following are examples of using an extrinsic datum:

  • Rotating spindle method
  • Rotating part method
