Light Scattering

Light scattering techniques use the scattered reflection of light from a surface to infer information about the surface texture, structure, and material properties. Techniques include:

  • Specular reflection from smooth mirror-like surfaces
  • Diffuse scattering of rough or textured surfaces
  • Elastic scattering in which the light maintains its wavelength (e.g., Rayleigh, Mie scattering).
  • Inelastic scattering: in which the light changes wavelength (e.g., Raman scattering).
