Straightness and flatness are basic form tolerances that can be measured using simple hand gages or more complex and precise electronic instruments:

• Straight edge artifact
• Electronic Level
• Autocolimator
• Surface profile instrument with a long travel range
• Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) by sampling points and constructing a straight line or a plane to find deviation
