Screw Thread Metrology

Screw thread metrology covers the process of inspecting screw and bolt threads to ensure that they meet dimensional and geometric specifications. Critical dimensions include pitch, major and minor diameters, lead, flank, and crest.

Screw Thread Metrology

The diameters, angle, lead, roundness, taper, and straightness of a screw thread all must be consistent and correct in order for the threads to engage properly with the mating surface. Simple gages, such as a go/no-go gage can be used to verify that the threads fall between the minimum and maximum allowable material conditions. Thread gages, micrometers, and calipers can all be used to ensure thread quality as well. In production, vision-based and contact-based systems can provide high-speed verification of thread dimensions.
